The second OddComment so far. Stuart Fratkin, Patrick Labyorteaux y Dean Cameron reminisce about a twenty year old 80’s movie made in the 90’s. They’re old, so they forget words, trail their sentences off into…

Learn the backstage machinations of how the movie was put together and sold based on the title and the involvement of two other people who had been in another movie with “School” in the title.

From IMDB Comments:

Sure, this flick would never be an Oscar contender, but does anyone really give a flying monkey! The important thing is that you can sit back, view this mayhem, and chuckle yourself into convulsions! Rising star of the slopes John E. Roland (Tom Breznahan, brother of Kevin and star of horror flicks such as The Brain (1988), Twice Dead (1988) and Mirror, Mirror (1990)), winds up in the infamous section 8, a collection of party animals led by Dave Marshack (a very amusing Dean Cameron - why this guy never became famous beats the hell out of me?), who is far more interested in beer and babes - who wouldn’t be!!!, rather than being the saint of the slopes. Along with other members Ed (Patrick Labortyeaux, brother of Matthew) and “Fitz” Fitgerald (Stuart Fratkin, who equally matches Dean Cameron is the comedy department, who, too, deserves more these days), they set out to claim the mountain and win the annual event when they learn they’re being forced out of their accommodation, due to their rowdy nature. Throw in some gorgeous females, most notably the stunning Charlie Spradling (wife of Jason London), and you have all the ingredients of a cult classic. Sadly, only Dean Cameron was to return for the sequel, due to financial difficulties. He, alone, makes the sequel worthwhile. So, settle in one evening, grab some beer and pizzas, then sit back and take in this madcap flick!

I definitely miss this show. I was about 10 years old while it was airing, I found it very hilarious (at the account of Bo and Abe getting themselves into “hot water” whenever they would attempt a certain scheme) and I looked forward to watching it every Saturday afternoon while curled up in front of the television. Back then, I found it to be very original compared to what was airing on television at that time, it was definitely a breath of fresh air for me. This show is prime example of a good show that is overlooked and underrated because of all of the overrated, watered-down shows in which were competing with it at the time (It always seems to be the actual good shows that get the boot and the crapola shows that remain on television for at least 4 or 5 years). “They Came From Outer Space” will always remain a classic in MY book!

Review From Amazon.com

Roger Hedden’s charming romantic comedy works where so many like ensemble projects fail–on the strength of its amiable characters. The simple but clever plot, which involves a gambling debt, a bartender collecting overdue IOUs, and a tangled web of lies, sets in motion the trajectories of a dozen or so characters wandering the streets of New York one chilly December night. Against this backdrop they pair off, group up, and slowly wind their way back to the very bar where it all started. Hedden’s sharp ear for dialogue comes out in lilting, low-key conversations (he previously cowrote Sleep with Me and Bodies, Rest & Motion), but his greatest triumph is the casting. Campbell Scott, at his understated best as the warm, winsome center of the film, strolls through a series of Big Apple watering holes with all the quiet confidence and affable friendliness a wounded romantic can muster. Equally fine are sweetly sincere Moira Kelly as his sister, thoughtful debt collector Peter Riegert, goofy barfly Katrin Cartlidge, conniving creep Eric Stoltz, and especially the often misused Daryl Hannah, who sends sparks as Scott’s old girlfriend. Hedden’s leisurely pace gives us time to hang with the characters, who are fine company and never overstay their welcome (the film clocks in under 90 minutes). It’s the kind of movie Hollywood has forgotten how to make, a modestly endearing little piece that eschews big drama for delightful characters and enchanting moments.

Noah Baumbach’s first movie focuses on the indecisive, enervated months that four college buddies spend together after graduation-clinging to old habits (crossword puzzles, trivia games), living near or on campus-before they go their separate ways. What finally makes them move on, and sets this film apart from other slacker comedies, is the women they’re attracted to: risk-taking students who are more capable than their men of standing on their own. Baumbach doesn’t write grand speeches; he lets details and repartee carry the movie’s emotional weight, and when it finally dawns on his characters that, even in postgrad limbo, life has a way of pushing you along, there’s nothing self-congratulatory about the discovery. The picture has a lovely, understated autobiographical lilt. The perfect ensemble cast includes Josh Hamilton, Carlos Jacott, John Lehr, Chris Eigeman, Parker Posey, and the reigning king of independent-film ennui, Eric Stoltz, as the seen-it-all barkeep. -Bruce Diones

Warning: possible spoilers! ::As with many films released in Hollywood over the years, this one is a victim of having a title that has no significance to the actual plot. “Bad Dreams” is just a flashy title to lure viewers, making them think it’s another Elm Street ripoff. Forget about Elm Street. Watch this one with an open mind. The only similarities it has to Elm Street three are these: A burned up psycho, a mental hospital (in which the patients are much more believable than the ones of NOES 3) and Jennifer Rubin. That’s where the similarities end. The heroine of the film is not, in fact, having dreams, but hallucinations. You never once see her go to sleep and dream of this guy, he just shows up (usually conveniently after she’s taken her meds. Hmmmm!) It is an excellent and smart psychological thriller, and completely underrated. And Dean Cameron, as always, is excellent, lovable, and funny in the role of Ralph, a horny teenager suffering from borderline personality disorder.
